THE HOME OF SOCIAL TV

Twitter ticker among Samsung’s TV app finalists

Posted by Cory Bergman on December 28, 2010

A Twitter ticker, social TV guides and a drawing game are among the finalists announced today in a $500,000 contest to create the best new apps for Samsung TVs.

A couple of our favorites, TV Twicker (above) and Guroo TV, made the cut in the “Free the TV Challenge” contest. TV Twicker displays tweets as they’re published along the bottom of your TV set, and Guroo TV shows trending shows based on social media. The winners will be announced at CES early next month.

“We are very excited to see the level of creativity and out-of-the-box thinking that resulted from the Challenge,” says Samsung’s Eric Anderson. “The participating developers truly took the time to customize their apps for the SmartTV and 3D.”

The contest was created to spur more app development on Samsung, which has a few solid hits (Pandora, Netflix, Hulu Plus, Facebook, Twitter) but needs greater depth and diversity of TV apps. And just like the iPhone and iPad, which are unique user experiences, you never know what apps will emerge that are truly customized for the TV platform.

I prefer Samsung products and this is one reason. These competitions creates scope for development of new apps that are entertaining and has good features.

I prefer that the crap on the bottom of my screen be limited to what I’m watching and Dorothy, Toto are in PERIL.

Twitter on TV??? Oh please! I really think Samsung have missed the point of what people want to do on their TV and just see connected TV as a big computer screen. Where’s the convergence with broadcast? See my detailed critique on my blog: http://theconnectedset.tv/550

CONVERGENCE is a setup routine designed to align the three CRT outputs for one properly defined image on the target (screen). In older usage it refers to how the single CRT display focuses and aligns the picture to provide the least amount of linear distortions.

It’s stinkin’ easy to put your computer picture on the TV or verse vice-a anymore. Actually wanting to merge the two is the stunt Jackass never got to.

    Useless to me.

These contests trigger the young population to think and create interesting games and applications. It’s good to arrange such competitions.

These competitions are good in one way. They trigger the young generation to think and find interesting games and applications.

No one wants to read your blog. Get over yourself and quit looking for ways to plug your useless words. Oh the arrogance!

That is interesting. You think the technology is useless, but so is your opinion. You can’t communicate effectively because your grammar is lousy. The correct spelling of the term is vice versa. How much do you really know anyway?

Thanks for your great review! As the developer of TV Twicker, I’m glad that you saw the value of combining social media and TV. I think everybody is wrapped up in “apps”, and forget that thousands of separately designed user interfaces will only keep adoption low, instead of adding value to the platform.
