CES: Netflix to get its own button on TV, Blu-ray remotes

If you have any doubt that Netflix wants to power on-demand programming on your TV set, look no further than today’s announcement. Netflix says it has inked deals with TV, Blu-Ray and streaming device manufacturers to add a “one-click” Netflix button on their remote controls.

Sharp, Sony, and Toshiba will add the button on remotes for select connected TV sets. Blu-ray players include Panasonic, Samsung, Sharp, Sony, and Toshiba. And Boxee, Iomega and Roku, too.

“For members who want even more convenience when instantly watching TV shows and movies streaming from Netflix, the answer is about to be right in their hands,” said Netflix Chief Product Officer Neil Hunt. “No more turning on the TV, going to a home screen and searching for the Netflix icon.”

The button — that’s just a concept in the photo provided by Netflix — may remind you of many cable companies’ “on demand” buttons on their cable remotes. Clearly, that’s the space that Netflix wants to occupy. Here’s the press release.
