CES: 3D TV continues despite the drawbacks

I’m going to throw a little opinion into here. I don’t see the big deal about 3D television. I’ve seen the demos and, it’s cool for a little while but that’s it. I don’t see the consumer demand. Hell, I’ll buy almost any new gadget and this doesn’t do it for me.

I suppose I have the usual concerns; the glasses are silly, expensive or both. The picture quality is degraded by the polarized glasses. For those of us who wear glasses, the 3D ones are a pain to use. 3D often looks like lots of 2D layers stacked in front of each other. And there’s no consistent 3D programming.

That’s not stopping Sony, which seems to be leading the charge. The Washington Post writes: “Beyond shipping the expected lineup of 3D high-def TVs, Sony will also ship a 3D-enabled Vaio laptops and 3D-capable versions of its Handycam and Bloggie video cameras that could let users make their own 3D movies.” That’s a real commitment.

Still – will you shoot in 3D? Will the average consumer? I’m not buying it, in both meanings of the term. What do you think?
