Facebook to rent movies, TV shows next?

Posted by Cory Bergman on March 8, 2011

Warner Bros. announced it will offer movie rentals through Facebook for 30 credits, or $3 dollars each. To see it in action, visit the Dark Knight Facebook page:

After you click the “watch” button, Facebook asks if the Dark Knight app can access your profile, and then you’re prompted to rent the movie for 30 credits. You can watch the movie from the Dark Knight Facebook page as many times as you want for a 48-hour period.

Offering digital rentals/downloads via Facebook pages is potentially a powerful distribution path. The Dark Knight Facebook page, for example, has nearly 4 million fans. When the movie was offered for rental, Warner Bros. was able to promote the rental directly to the movie’s most die-hard fans. So far, Dark Knight is the only movie on Facebook, but Warner Bros. says more are on the way.

“Making our films available through Facebook is a natural extension of our digital distribution efforts,” said Thomas Gewecke, President of Warner Bros. Digital Distribution. “It gives consumers a simple, convenient way to access and enjoy our films through the world’s largest social network.”

There’s no word if Warner Bros. plans to offer TV shows in the future, too, but the same approach could work with different pricing. As we’ve seen from experiments like the Facebook premiere of a Spongebob episode, capturing a fan base inside Facebook — without leaving it — can be very powerful.

What’s this mean for Netflix and Hulu? It’s too early to say, but if Facebook hits a critical mass of content — and figures out how to port it to tablets and TV — then things will get interesting.

Quietly? Nothing quiet about it. It’s bold and it’s in-your-face and it’s of course brilliant. Almost every website in America (if not beyond) is already plastered with little “f’s” as if they were Christmas lights on the Griswolds’ house. Six months and every TV station in America will have to stream their newscast on FB (and pay, I’m sure, for the privilege). Now we really are to the point where you spell Facebook B-O-R-G.

$3.00 is TOO MUCH for a crappy computer video. People supposedly join Facebook because it’s a fairly CHEAP way to find their friends or make new ones. Why should they spend so much on something they might easily find at a YARD SALE?

I absolutely love Friday Night Lights, and would hate to see it leave. So I just want to know when the announcements are made.

Transfer from Fifth Avenue   KELLAND reviews: Paris, like a typical woman, except I installed lipstick and   wallet handbag, my hands and ultimately, only pink Longchamp bags, which not only   incorporated the apple of my laptop, basically do not put other into a small bag of things   together even have won, including: notebook, maps, keys, or even the next day I   went to the fitness center, exercise clothing. It is durable, can hold, color   variety, cool Gouxuan, and do not, can have folded and placed handbag, very   easy, no wonder Paris, regardless of status, regardless of color, a staff Longchamp sale, there is simply “French Country Package” status. Price is also very approachable,   a little big nylon bag in general more than two thousand dollars, Longchamp   Tote this large only in the thousands up and down, quite a bargain. Look like good-looking, durable   good equipment, and inexpensive, brand impact is large enough … enough …   really, you have no reason not to do with a Longchamp
