Analyst: Apple to launch subscription video service

Jefferies analyst Peter Misek has the TV industry buzzing today with a prediction that Apple is working on a huge, cloud-based video service that will take on Netflix. Misek writes in his report that Apple is close to opening a massive data center in North Carolina that will power it.

Of course, Apple doesn’t comment on these sorts of things, and Misek’s report lacks a lot of hard facts. But given Apple’s position in the market, a subscription video service makes a lot of sense. He speculates the service could be accompanied by a new device, “We would guess a TV or a new set-top box.”

Misek also adds, “We find it notable that the content companies, citing a lack of domain license, asked Cablevision (CVC) to remove channels from its iPad app. We believe these same companies are negotiating some sort of deal with Apple.”

Again, speculation, but it will certainly be interesting to see what happens.
