Watch a debate in sync with tweets, transcript

Posted by Cory Bergman on April 14, 2011

As we begin to approach election season in the U.S., the Canadian season is in full swing. GlobalNews.ca has posted a cool interactive view of this week’s Leaders’ Debate, which ties tweets and a transcript together with the debate video:

As you watch the replay, the transcript window scrolls to match. Below the player, a red line shows how many tweets-per-minute are being sent at that moment, as well as a sentiment tracker for all four leaders in the debate. You can fast-forward the player — or click any moment in the transcript — to jump ahead.

I’m not keeping up on Canadian politics, but I scrolled ahead to the highest tweet spike. “You trust the Canadian people so little, that when you didn’t like something on someone young person’s Facebook, you tossed them out of your meeting,” said Michael Ignatieff, the leader of the Liberal Party, in a pointed statement to current Prime Minister Stephen Harper. And sure enough, that moment was one of the most heated back-and-forth exchanges in the debate.

One additional view that would be cool to add to the experience: “best of” tweets that replay in sync with the video. But overall, a terrific way to watch a replay of the debate.
