Ustream launches Facebook app for social streaming

Posted by Cory Bergman on May 9, 2011

The live video site Ustream has launched an easy-to-install Facebook app with some very cool social features. The app brings live streaming to Facebook pages — tied to your Ustream account — with some extras that lets video producers get the word out.

Upon installation, you can decide whether you want Facebook’s social stream or Ustream’s chat functionality alongside the player. To drive new fans, you can require users to “like” your page to view the stream. The app’s design is customizable, and you can choose to remove ads from the stream, as well.

The app includes Ustream’s “Join the Crowd” feature, which is a way for users to sign up for email alerts of upcoming live events. Users can click “remind me” on any upcoming event to get pinged via email with a reminder. They can also share the live events on their Facebook walls or invite their friends to a live event — great ways to tap the Facebook crowd to attract an audience.

Here’s a video tutorial on how to install and customize the app. And to see it in action, Will.I.Am will be streaming live at 2 p.m. PT/5 p.m. ET today via the Ustream app.
