As expected, Google announced at its developers conference that Android apps along with the Android Marketplace is coming to Google TV devices this summer. The Android 3.1 apps will use the same SDK as Honeycomb (for you techies), and will auto-update over the air for existing Google TV users.
Google’s Mike Claren also announced that there are new products based on the update coming from Sony, Vizio, Samsung and Logitech. “This is great news for Google TV,” he said during this morning’s keynote.
Google announced that Android hit 4.5 billion application installs to date on 100 million devices, so extending the market to TVs will be a big shot in the arm for the struggling Google TV platform (previous coverage). If you’re curious, a session at Google I/O on Wednesday will be dedicated to building Google TV apps, and it will be streamed live.
