THE HOME OF SOCIAL TV

When do TV viewers post on Twitter, Facebook?

Posted by Cory Bergman on May 13, 2011

TV Guide conducted a survey on how its users engage with social media around TV, and the results may surprise you a bit. “Users said they are more likely to talk about their favorite shows on Twitter and Facebook before and after the show airs rather than during the show,” TV Guide explained. The chart:

Twitter users tend to be a little more active leading up and during TV shows than Facebook users. (It would be interesting to track this against shows — the better the show, the less chatter as it airs?) TV Guide also asked how people interact with the TV shows’ celebs and official social media accounts:

Interestingly, 20% of users told TVGuide that they’re watching more live TV because of the potential for spoilers over social media.

Finally, while we post a daily list of the most social TV shows, TV Guide pulled together the top 10 list from the 2010-2011 season. Using TVGuide.com episode check-ins, Facebook Likes and comments, here are the top 5 with a surprise at the top:

  1. NCIS
  2. American Idol
  3. Criminal Minds
  4. Glee
  5. House

It’s easy to tweet during Ad breaks. That would skew these results. I would also like to have seen a “next day” option included.
