THE HOME OF SOCIAL TV

Miso branches out with social TV app gallery

When we talked to Miso CEO Somrat Niyogi last month, he said the TV check-in company was just scratching the surface of social TV. “(The) check-in is just the starting point of a conversation about TV but it is not the be-all end-all,” he said. “We believe the social TV experience can exist everywhere.”

Today, Miso has rolled out a third-party app gallery that brings Miso into new devices and new experiences. The gallery launches as they announce the winners of their developer contest — a Windows 7 mobile app. There’s also a WordPress app and desktop widgets. It’s all part of a strategy to open up their technology as a social TV platform.

“Our goal is to be the go-to social TV partner for developers, cable companies, Internet connected TV experiences — anyone who wants to bring social TV experiences to their product or service,” Miso explains in a blog post. “Our belief is that we can’t innovate on the second screen or in social TV alone. Openness and collaboration are key.”

While the app gallery has only a few submissions to date, Miso says developers will soon be able to submit their projects directly to the gallery for review and approval.

“We have heard about social integrations with Hulu or Netflix, even integrations directly with the set-top-box,” Niyogi said last month. “How cool would it be to see what your friends are watching directly on TV and then be able to change the channel based off what your friends are watching?”
