THE HOME OF SOCIAL TV

Vevo debuts social video rooms powered by Chill

Sure, TV is social, but what about online video? The video site Vevo has partnered up with Chill — which is similar to Turntable.fm but for video — to launch “Vevo Rooms” around three big-name musicians: Katy Perry, Lil Wayne and Snoop Dogg. Fans can play videos for the room, chatting alongside the action.

“The best part? There’s a good chance that the artists themselves will drop in from time to time,” explains Vevo. “Maybe announced, maybe not. It would be pretty cool to check a Snoop video and chat with the big Dogg himself at the same time. The more you hang out, the better your chances are.”

Chill is powering the social experience around the clips. A week ago, it held one of its most popular social video events to date: the debut of a new music video for “Mindless Behavior” (above). I dropped into the event — which was packed with several thousand people — and the band chatted along with fans as the video played. Then fans could play their favorite clips while the band kept up the conversation.

“(I) don’t think any bands have done a truly social content drop like this where the fans totally participated in the experience and in a two-way manner,” explained Chill’s Andrew Skotzko in an email to Lost Remote. “(It’s) only going to get better from here as we improve the product experience. We’ve got quite a few in the pipeline to create social events around new music and other TV content.”
