Wireless webcams (on your chopper?)

7/27/00

One look at the success of Big Brother, and we're quick to realize that webcams can drive some serious traffic.

And now there's a new webcam by Pentax that's a computer and camera all in one. Just feed the VersaCam some power and slip in a wireless modem (in its PCMCIA Type II interface slot) and you're off and running.

Today's wireless modems are kicking out some serious bandwidth. Ricochet, for example, is expanding to 128kbps. The choppy "video" of the past is becoming a lot more fluid.

Since the camera is just a little bigger than a human hand, the implications are tremendous. You can put it just about anywhere. In fact, you can carry it with you. And best of all, it's really inexpensive.

I haven't tried this, but what about mounting a couple VersaCams on your news chopper? How about one in the cockpit and one of those rear-mounted jobs?

As long as you stay within the modem's coverage area (and not fly too high), viewers can jump on their computers to check out what Sky Bird Attack Chopper 7 is up to. Do you think that will drive traffic to your site? (Hell yes).

The only downside, of course, is when your competition keeps logging on to sneak a peak at what you're covering.

That's just the tip of the iceberg. You can rotate some cameras (appropriately branded, of course) around interesting places of business in the market. A rock-climbing gym, for example. Then follow up with a "unique value proposition" that includes the webcam and some online advertising.

Hmm. Did I detect some revenue?
