Web tools to monitor local trends

It’s beyond me why more local broadcasters prefer costly and sometimes outdated research, rather than using the web to monitor local trends in their communities. I’m not saying you should never commission exhaustive, professional research again, but the web provides real-time trends. For example, in my local community of Boston, I would search Flickr to [...]

Stephen Colbert interviews Dan Rather

I just finished watching last night’s Colbert interview with Dan Rather. It’s pretty funny. As I’ve been watching Rather make the talk show rounds to plug his new show on HDNet, I’m find myself liking him more and more. He’s more relaxed and less formal. Maybe he’s acting more like himself and less as “Dan [...]

NYTVF sells comedy pilot to NBC Universal

In just its second year, the New York Television Festival has sold its first pilot to a major broadcast network. It’s a testament to the festival’s growing importance in the network development process. NBC Universal picked up, “Split the Difference,” winner of the Best Comedy Pilot and the TV Guide Audience Award at this year’s NYTVF. “The New York Television Festival is thrilled for the team behind ‘Split the Difference,’ which was one of the standout pilots in this year’s competition,” said NYTVF founder Terence Gray. Click here to view the full 22-minute pilot on MSN. Full press release after the jump.

Signing off from CNN blog party

At the risk of calling it too soon, I think the Republicans will retain control of the Senate. Before I sign off however, a few thoughts. . . . Blogs are not only here to stay, but have found their place in election coverage, and American media. Think about this . . . imagine if [...]

Giving props to the CNN IT guys

Just a moment ago, one of the CNN IT guys came over to me asking if I was looking for a firewire for my camera, so I could download my photos. I didn’t ask for one and then I remembered I posted something earlier about it. Well CNN read it and and got one of [...]

Cheers at CNN blog party

After an evening of coffeehouse din, there were more cheers than jeers when CNN announced that the Democrats won control of the House.

Craig Newmark comments on election

In a post on the National Journal’s Tech Daily Dose, Craigslist founder Craig Newmark comments on the role of the web in tonight’s election, “What’s different about this election is the role of the ‘net. People are connecting online to work together to defeat bad guys. My experience tells me that this is sustainable, in [...]

First impressions of Katie on Election Night

OK, I’ve just watched the first 10 minutes of Katie’s first Election Night broadcast at CBS. I have to say the broadcast doesn’t look much different than when Dan Rather was doing it. Thoughts?

Triple platform coverage at WNBC and WABC

In a first for local affiliates in New York, both WNBC and WABC are providing election coverage on air, online, and on their digital channels. WNBC is providing extended coverage on its digital channel with an hour-special hosted by Chuck Scarborough and Lynda Baquero. WABC is just updating full-screen graphics on its digital channel. I [...]

Digg.com down

I’ve been trying to visit Digg for the last half hour and the site has been down. They have a message up stating, “We’ll be back shortly” along with a list of suggested sites to visit. Never saw that before. Strange on such a big night or is Election Night no big deal for sites [...]

Photos from CNN blog party

I’m a dingbat and forgot to bring my camera cable to download my pics onto my computer. However, my fellow blogger Ann Althouse has posted a series of photos from tonight’s CNN blogger party on her blog at Althouse.

What’s for dinner in America’s newsrooms tonight?

CNN is now serving up a spread you don’t often see in TV land, acorn squash stuffed with risotto, stuffed pork loin, poached salmon, and even alcohol is being served. What’s going to keep your newsroom going through the night? Any unusual munchies?

Searchable database of federal spending

At the end of the day, what matters is how our tax dollars are spent, right? In the age of the Internet, I’ve longed for an easy way to monitor how the federal government spends our money. ED Morrissey of Caption’s Quarters just told me about FedSpending.org. You can check out the top 100 contractors [...]

Popular election tags

In addition to Digg, check out the most popular tags on Technorati or Flickr as well to gauge what’s on the minds of web users this evening. Thanks to “Tag Man” for this suggestion! Check out his “Election Poetry – Fun with Web 2.0 Tags”.

Monitoring Digg.com on Election Night

This is the first major election for social networking news website Digg.com. It will be fun to monitor stories on its homepage as the night wears on. I can wait to see what’s on the minds of Digg users at 10pmEST when the networks suspend their regular programming to cover returns. Top story on Digg [...]

Comparing Senate candidate websites on Alexa

I always enjoy looking for new perspectives, so I thought it would be interesting to compare the web traffic of Senate candidate websites in hotly contested races on Alexaholic. In Virginia, traffic on Jim Webb’s website rose sharply in the closing days of the race, well above traffic for George Allen’s site. Claire McCaskill’s web [...]

All civil at CNN’s blog party

Been hanging at CNN’s blog party for about an hour now. Tryst, an otherwise quiet place to have a cup of coffee, is a maze of wires, laptops, and studio lights. About 25 bloggers from across the country are here. Aside from some Internet connection issues, everyone thus far seems civil. Some of us have [...]

LR is on the ground in DC for Election Day

I just arrived in Washington and will be joining my fellow bloggers at Tryst later on for the “CNN E-lection Nite Blog Party.” LR will be taking more of a “media perspective,” reporting on innovative coverage, on air and online. We know you’ll have few breaks today, but we’d love to hear about how your [...]

LR Blogging at CNN E-lection Nite Blog Party

CNN’s Internet reporters Jacki Schechner and Abbi Tatton will be hosting the event with analysis from bloggers appearing on CNN Pipeline and on CNN/U.S. Read press release after the jump . . .

Knight Foundation’s call for community news initiatives

Gary Kebbel, the Knight Foundation’s journalism initiatives program officer, made a special appeal at the RTNDA Technology Summit yesterday, inviting anyone (content creators and technologists alike) to participate in the Knight Foundation’s News Challenge. LR previously reported on Knight’s ambitious program to distribute $25 million over the next 5 years in support of innovative community [...]
