Buys Newsvine

NEW YORK has acquired social news media site Newsvine.

Newsvine focuses on bridging the gap between traditional and new media with a site that provides news from the Associated Press and other organizations that is placed and added to by the Newsvine community. will keep the six-member team in place, and it will remain a separate entity based in Seattle, GM Charlie Tillinghast said. Terms were not disclosed.

Tillinghast said Newsvine has built an interesting site in the space since it started in March 2006. He said he’d like to see some of Newsvine’s features incorporated into, though it’s not yet clear which.

“We think that community is a cornerstone of Internet news going forward,” Tillinghast said.

Newsvine co-founder Mike Davidson said the site’s mission has never been to displace mainstream media but instead create a social ecosystem around the news.

“Our vision has always been to create an environment where mainstream media and independent media live together and frankly make each other better,” Davidson said.

The site has been getting 1 million unique users per month, he said.
